Most visitors stay on one or two of these islands. All travel between them is by boat.

These places are also part of many routes through the islands.

  • Wakai: the main village and harbour on Batudaka. Public boats from Ampana and the ferry from Gorontalo arrive here.
  • Walea Kodi: a hilly island in the east with a few small resorts and shallow reefs near the beach.
  • Pulau Puah: an island near the eastern edge of the group with three fishing villages and no roads.
  • Ampana and Luwuk: towns on the Sulawesi mainland with ATMs, shops and onward transport.

Which island should I stay on?

It depends on access and interests. Bomba is closest to Ampana. Kadidiri has the most accommodation and is near Wakai. Una Una is the base for volcano treks and diving. Malenge has village visits and forest walks.

Where to stay
How many islands can I visit in one trip?

Two islands fit in about five days, three or four in a week. Every move between islands is a boat crossing, so allow at least two nights in each place.

How far apart are the islands?

Crossings take from about fifteen minutes to several hours. There are no roads between islands. Una Una is separated from the main group by open water.
