Small wooden boat crossing open water between two forested Togean islands, leaving a long wake

A ten-day Togean itinerary that doesn't rush the boats

Between islands, with time to spare.

Itineraries

This is the Togean itinerary I followed in July 2026, written up for anyone with about ten days who would rather not spend half of them waiting on a jetty. It starts and ends in Ampana, uses Wakai as the hinge, and spends most of its time on two islands, Kadidiri and Malenge. The main idea is simple: every time the plan depends on a boat, leave some slack after it.

The shape of the trip

Boats in the Togeans don't always run every day, and they don't always run when you were told they would [TODO: verify current schedules]. I've been caught by that before, so this time I planned around three rules. Arrive in Ampana the day before the ferry. Sleep near the ferry the night before going back. Take one long day trip, not three.

If you are coming in from the north, swap the first two days for the crossing Tasya describes in Gorontalo to the Togeans, and adjust the end to match.

The plan, before the boats had their say.

The table shows what I did, not what I'd planned. My notebook version had Una-Una on day 4, and it slipped a day because the boat needed more divers [TODO: verify minimum numbers for the Una-Una trip]. Because nothing else depended on that day, the slip cost me nothing. That's the whole argument for slack: it doesn't have to be used to be worth having.

Notes on each stretch

Ampana and the crossing

I flew into Luwuk and went on to Ampana by road, as Ruben did in his Ampana to Kadidiri post, and I followed his advice closely: arrive the day before, buy the ticket in advance, keep electronics in a dry bag. I'd heard that some boats call at Bomba on the Batudaka side [TODO: verify], which is worth asking about if you want to start somewhere other than Wakai.

Kadidiri

Four nights on Kadidiri was one more than I had in 2024, when I wrote up my three nights on Kadidiri, and I used it. Una-Una was the trip I skipped last time. This time I went, snorkelling while the others dived [TODO: verify whether snorkellers can join the dive boats], and Ruben is right about the boat ride in diving Una-Una. It's long. I was glad I'd done it, and glad I hadn't tried to fit it into three nights.

Malenge and Pulau Papan

Malenge was the quiet half of the trip. I stayed at a family-run place [TODO: verify name], walked the bridge to Pulau Papan on the first full morning, and did very little else. Tasya's notes on staying on Malenge were the reason I went, and they were accurate down to the state of the planks.

Back to Wakai

I spent the last night in Wakai rather than taking an early boat from Malenge on the morning of the ferry. It cost me a night on the island, and it was the right call. The ferry was on time, but I had no way of knowing it would be.

What I'd add with more time

Ten days covers the middle of the archipelago. With more time, I would go further:

  • Walea Kodi. It's in the east of the archipelago, further from Wakai than anywhere on this route [TODO: verify transport options]. Two people I met at dinner had been, and both said it was worth the effort. I haven't been, so I'm passing that on rather than vouching for it.
  • Pulau Puah. A boatman on Kadidiri offered a day trip there [TODO: verify location, what is there and the cost]. I ran out of days.
  • Bomba. It's a village on the Batudaka side, and I'd like to spend a night there and see what's within reach by boat [TODO: verify accommodation and transport].

What I'd cut

If you only have a week, cut Malenge to two nights and skip Una-Una. That leaves a Kadidiri and Malenge trip with one spare day, which is tight but workable. I wouldn't cut the night in Wakai. It's the part of the plan that holds the rest of it together.

Before you go

Sort out cash before you leave Ampana and download anything you'll need offline. I took more cash than I thought I'd need and came home with very little of it. Ruben's post on cash and signal in the Togeans has the reasons. Message the places you're staying with your dates before you leave the mainland too, because replies from the islands can take a day or two.
