Trekking in the Togeans
Trekking routes in the Togeans are unmarked and have no facilities. The main trek is to the crater of Mount Colo, an active volcano on Una Una. Malenge and Batudaka have forest trails where wildlife can be seen.
A local guide is recommended on all trails and required for Mount Colo.
Before you walk
Heat and humidity are the main difficulties. Start early.
- Walk with a local guide and agree the route beforehand.
- Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
- Wear shoes with grip; trails are muddy after rain.
- Take all rubbish with you.

Frequently asked questions
How difficult is the Mount Colo trek?
It is the longest and steepest walk in the islands, in hot conditions. Reasonable fitness is needed.
Do I need a guide?
Yes. Trails are unmarked, and on Mount Colo the guide knows the current volcanic conditions.
What can I see on a night walk?
Possibly tarsiers, cuscus and coconut crabs. Sightings are not guaranteed.
